Cook It Yourself ~ Organic French Baguette

homemade baguette

Oh là là !!  Zee delicious fransh baguette es très easy to make!! It takes only 4 ingredients (5 if you count water). It tastes better than the baguettes you buy at the store because simple truly is better when it comes to your food. No artificial junk like colours or preservatives. Bookmark this recipe because you will never get your baguettes from a store again!

~ The Ingredients ~
4 cups organic flour
2.5 teaspoons ground sea salt
1.25 teaspoon organic unrefined sugar
1.24 teaspoons yeast
1.5 cup warm filtered water

In your mixer bowl, add the warm water (not hot) to the yeast and sugar. Mix lightly and let sit for 10 minutes. This is reanimating and activating the yeast. It’s alive!!!!!!!

* Note about the video * If you happen to hear the “tapdancing” in the background, that’s just my dog Scotty entering the kitchen! He’s pretty talented.

Using your mixer, mix the salt and the flour one cup at a time to the yeast mixture. Mix until dough looks like dough and pulls away from the sides. Knead for a minute or two more after this point.

Remove the dough from the bowl & rub oil on all the sides and bottom. Return the dough to the bowl, cover with a tea towel and let rise in a warm place for about an hour and a half. Dough will at least double in size like shown in the picture.

Dough will have doubled in size or more. Punch down and separate in half. Form each half into a baguette and place on a non-stick baking sheet. Cover with a tea towel and let rest for 20-30 minutes.

Baguettes will puff up a bit as shown in the picture. Take this time to turn on your oven so it can be ready to go. Set oven to 400F.

Place in the middle rack of the heated oven. Bake for about 20 minutes, maybe a few more depending on ovens. 20 minutes is perfect for me. Let the baguettes cool almost completely before you cut into them. This requires will power!

Have some butter or your favorite dip or spread ready! I ate my fresh baguette with this super easy and awesome wild caught salmon spread I whipped up while waiting for the dough to rise.

Oh I didn’t know you could sprout wheat! Do you find it in whole grains? How do you do that? 🙂

      • Someday I’ll write a post on it. Check this out for now nourishedkitchen.com/sprouted-grain/ it’s a bit more time consuming, but the only way we eat wheat products now. There are several places online to buy organic wheat berries. We go through Pleasant Hill Grain.
